Some shoots just refuse to be rushed. And honestly, good for them.
The rain that pushed this session had one job — and it delivered. We came back to one of those soft overcast days that outdoor photographers quietly celebrate. No harsh shadows, no blown-out sky, just clean even light sitting over everything perfectly. Worth the wait.
Now I’ve photographed a lot of outdoor spaces across Charlotte NC, but this one for the book. Pickleball court. Outdoor movie theatre. Mini golf. Hot tub. Seating that goes from rustic park-style all the way to full lounge luxury. Games everywhere. I kept turning a corner expecting to be done and finding something else worth photographing.
As a vacation rental photographer near Charlotte, I know outdoor spaces close bookings. Guests scroll through interiors and they’re interested — but when they hit an outdoor setup like this, that’s when the decision gets made. Ryan and Addie built something here that genuinely deserves to be seen, and it was an absolute treat to be the one to capture it.
The outdoor photos are finally here. And they were worth every day of waiting.
Photographing an outdoor space this big
With this many features, the order of the photos matters as much as the photos themselves. I walked the yard the way a guest would on their first evening: off the deck, past the hot tub and the outdoor movie screen, down to the lawn, then out to the pickleball court and the putting green. Every wide shot shows how one area connects to the next, so guests understand it is all one private backyard and not a list of separate amenities.
After the wide shots come the closer ones: the grill station, the fire pit circled by Adirondack chairs, the picnic tables under their umbrellas, the loungers on the grass. Those are the frames that let a guest picture where they will actually spend their time.
Why the overcast day was the right call
Bright sun sounds ideal for an outdoor shoot, but it is usually the opposite. Hard midday light throws dark shadows under umbrellas and deck rails, washes out the painted court lines and makes the lawn look patchy. The soft, even light we waited for kept the colors true: the navy fence, the red chairs, the green turf and the court surface all look the way they do in person.
A quick checklist for hosts with big backyards
- Open every umbrella and straighten every cushion before the shoot starts.
- Take the cover off the hot tub and make sure the water is clear.
- Sweep leaves and stray balls off the court and the putting green.
- Turn on string lights, the fire table and any screen you want to feature.
- Put away hoses, trash cans and pool tools so they stay out of the wide shots.
